Michaela Strachan has led the British public on a journey through the wild for more than 35 years. Despite her move to South Africa back in 2002, the Surrey-born presenter and conservationist continues to fulfil her role as an esteemed wildlife broadcaster here in the UK – but what’s life really like off-screen for the nature-loving star and what does her property look like?

Where does Michaela Strachan live now?

Since moving to Cape Town in 2002, Michaela has settled into a life in the great outdoors of South Africa with her partner Nick Chevallier and their child Oliver.

The pair live in Hout Bay which is located in the Western Cape of the country.

Back in 2014, she told the Mail Online: “We’ve been in this gorgeous house with panoramic views across the harbour for seven years.

“It’s like looking at a picture that changes all the time – from wild storms and forest fires to breathtaking sunsets.”

Michaela revealed to The Times earlier this year that the move to South Africa was a childhood dream.

She added: “Ever since I read Born Free I wanted to have a little place in Africa.”

The award-winning British presenter fulfilled her dreams when she met Nick Chevallier while filming in Cape Town many years ago.

Speaking to The Times, Michaela revealed: “In ten days I bought a little lock-up-and-go.

“Not expensive — the exchange rate was fantastic back then. And that changed my whole life.”

Does Michaela Strachan own other properties?

Having lived in Cape Town for 19 years, Michaela has revealed that she still owns property back in the UK.

As well as owning a sprawling estate in Hout Bay, Michaela told This is Money of her investments in various flats in London.

She said: “I own flats in London and a house in Cape Town, South Africa, where I live.

“It’s a spacious, open-plan house in a beautiful private estate in Hout Bay, nestled between Table Mountain National Park and the sea.

“We have fantastic views and you just go out of a gate and you are straight into the national park.”

Does Michaela Strachan live in the UK?

While Michaela no longer lives in the UK, the esteemed conservationist and presenter is a frequent visitor.

Having regularly reported for BBC One’s Countryfile up until 2009, Michaela is no stranger to living a split life between South Africa and the UK as she continues to return to home-soil for Autumnwatch, Springwatch and Winterwatch.

While Covid restrictions meant Michaela was unable to return to the UK to film earlier in the year, recent updates on the BAFTA-winning broadcaster’s Instagram shows she is no stranger to a hotel room while working on this year’s Autumnwatch series.

It seems the wildlife presenter has swapped the stunning views of her Cape Town abode for simpler furnishings in a British hotel where she completed her quarantine period upon her return to England.

Life off-screen

With a demanding on-screen life, Michaela revealed what it’s really like spending so much time away from her family.

She told The Mirror: “I always miss my family but I’ve been doing this job for a long time now.

“Although it seems outrageous to some people, to me travelling round the world has always been my life and it’s very normal.

“It takes a lot of scheduling and it takes a lot of juggling but we do it and we’re all used to it.”
