The Warm Home Discount scheme is designed to help people with the cost of energy bills as the weather becomes colder. As winter draws in, and individuals spend more time at home, it is likely the use of utilities will skyrocket. With many people struggling to meet these additional costs, the Government is offering a form of support.
Through the Warm Home Discount scheme, individuals could get £140 off their electricity bill for the coming winter.
While the scheme officially opens on October 18, 2021, there are some organisations who are already accepting applications.
Many more are expected to follow in September, and so Britons are being encouraged to take action.
The money, though, is not paid out to the individual who makes the application.
Instead, it serves as a one-off discount on a person’s electricity bill between October and March.
Britons may also be able to get the discount on their gas bill instead if their supplier provides them with both gas and electricity.
But they will need to contact the supplier in question to find out if this is possible.
However, individuals will need to consider if they are eligible for the Warm Home Discount before thinking about getting £140 off their bill.

Currently, there are two main ways to qualify for the Government scheme:
- If a person is in receipt of the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit
- If a person is on a low income and meets their energy supplier’s criteria for the scheme
The first individuals are known as the “core group” and can expect to receive a letter between October and December 2021 on the discount.
They will qualify for the discount if on July 4, 2021, all of the following apply:
- Their energy supplier is part of the scheme
- Their name (or their partner’s) is on the bill
- They or their partner are in receipt of the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit
If individuals do not receive a letter on the matter by December 31, and they believe they are eligible, they should contact the Warm Home Discount helpline.
Those who are on a low income and on certain means-tested benefits are described as the “broader group” under the scheme.
Their entitlement to the discount, however, will be decided by the energy supplier concerned.
The Government website explains: “The number of discounts suppliers can give is limited.

Britons are encouraged to do this even if they were eligible for a discount last year.
Individuals can then expect the discount to be applied to their bill by March 31, 2022.
A number of suppliers took part in the scheme in winter 2020/21, including British Gas, E.ON, EDF and Scottish Power.
