Six small changes to ‘massively boost’ chances of securing a quick home sale

Buying and selling a home can be a lengthy process, with many homeowners describing it as one of the most stressful times.

This means preparing the home in order to sell is crucial, including painting, decluttering and cleaning.

1. Declutter

Kate Conrad, interior design expert from Madison and Mayfair, said: “Make sure to declutter your home as much as possible if you want to sell it quickly.

“Anyone viewing a home that’s full of clutter and mess isn’t likely to be too impressed, so make sure to tidy everything neatly.

“Be ruthless. If you haven’t used something in more than a year the chances are you won’t when you move, so take it to the tip or donate it.”

Make sure to keep cupboards and small rooms tidy too as buyers will often want to know the layout of cupboards.

2. A lick of paint

White walls freshly painted compared to white walls a few years ago can look totally different, so give the home a spruce up with a lick of paint.

The expert said this can really be the difference between a sale and a buyer being unsure as old paint can make a room look dirty.

Kate added: “We are not saying redecorate, but a simple coat of paint added to those cobwebs and scuffs can go a long way.

“Be sure to make the rooms look as neutral as possible which will allow viewers to better imagine their own style and decor taking shape.”

3. Flowers and plants

Adding flowers and plants to rooms inside the home can add pops of colour as well as points of interest, making a room look more vibrant and bright.

Try placing a vase of freshly cut flowers on the dining or dressing table for property photos and make sure to replace these when people come to view the home.

4. Lighten up the place

The interiors expert continued: “No one likes a dark and gloomy home. So, make sure you let in as much natural light as possible and focus on positioning furniture in a particular way to make the most of the light.

“Lightening up a room can also make it appear bigger than it actually is, which will almost always be a positive in the eyes of a buyer as the bigger, the better.”

5. Fix and clean

Homeowners should make any minor repairs such as holes in walls, cracked tiles and leaky radiators before selling their home.

Many buyers will want to move into a home without having to make any changes, so make sure to go around the home and make a list.

6. Maximise empty space

The expert explained: “Show off your creative skills with empty spaces by adding your own ideas such as shelves, frames, lamp tables and even mirrors to maximise the potential and therefore make a potential buyer think of what they can do themselves.”
