NETFLIX fans are only just finding out how to fix problems with choppy and distorted sound – here’s what you need to know.

It can be frustrating if you’re settling down to watch a show or movie on the streaming service only to discover there’s no sound, or a distorted sound coming out.

But viewers should be aware before you start wondering if there is something wrong with the film or TV programme you’re watching that Netflix doesn’t output the audio.

Here are the most common issues viewers face and what might be done to solve the problem.

As with many electronic devices nowadays, it’s best to start with switching the TV or device off and on again.

As well as the TV, try doing it with any external audio device like soundbars, speakers, or home theatre systems you might be using.

Viewers can also check out the Netflix Help Centre page to see if Netflix is having problems in your area.

Alternatively, you can also check sites such as Downdetector to see if you are not alone in experiencing audio problems.

If everything seems fine, you may want to look for a particular problem, according to the experts at the website Makeuseof.com.

Choppy and distorted sound

If you’re experiencing choppy or distorted sound this could be down to a faulty device output or a flaw in the show you’re watching.

This could be a problem on an Apple TV, Roku or Smart TV as well as a PC or smartphone.

Should you experience this problem, viewers are advised to double-check the wires are correctly connected to the speakers.

If you’re using an HDMI cable, try reconnecting it to see if that solves the problem.

You can also check the device’s audio setting and adjust them if needed.

If that fails to solve the issue, try restarting the device and the speakers.

Netflix video has no sound

If you’re not having any issues with the video but there is no sound, the problem is probably with the device.

The experts say to try turning up the volume on your device as you may have just turned the volume down in the past and forgotten to readjust it.

Netflix users watching on a Mac or Windows browser should close all tabs all application that could be interfering with the audio.

You could also try disabling any antivirus or malware software on your computer.

Another thing to check is possible DRM issues on Netflix caused by Chrome Components.

Sound and video out of sync

A software bug is the most likely cause if sound and video aren’t in sync.

Depending on your device, this could be the app or the operating system.

First off, restart the Netflix app on your device to see if that solve the problem.

People using an iOS device can reset the app by going to Settings > Netflix and then the Reset button.

You can try updating your Netflix app to see if that resolves the problem.

If that doesn’t work, try deleting the app and then reinstalling it.

Should that fail to work, try rebooting your device and updating it and installing the latest update.

Voices are too low

Should you not be able to hear the voice of the actors, this could be due to something being wrong with one of your devices’ audio settings.

Initially, try turning up the volume first of all.

A device with Dolby Atmos or Surround Sound enable may work if your internet is working properly.

If not, the audio will sound distorted until the video and audio load in their complete quality.

Anyone using a headset or similar, you might have to adjust the audio options to Linear PCM or Stereo.

As well, check to see if there are any issues with the HDMI cable as this might need replacing.

Check your speaker’s settings too, and adjust them accordingly.

Hear a hissing or static sound

This can be a common problem on Windows PCs that rely on audio drivers to output audio.

Make sure you have the proper audio drivers installed.

If not, you’ll need to obtain the appropriate audio driver for your CPU configuration.

If you do have the correct driver, check and fix to see if the driver is corrupted.

To do this, just update your audio driver on Windows.

The IDT High Definition Audio Codec may also need to be updated.

Should you be having this issue on Roku, check your receiving device supports Dolby Digital Plus to play audio in Dolby Surround.

If it doesn’t, go to Netflix and watch a TV show or film, then go to Audio & Subtitles and beck non 5.1 under Audio.

Hopefully that should solve the problem.

Surround sound and Dolby not working

Some Netflix titles are available to watch in 5.1 surround sound using a Dolby Digital Plus setup.

As well, some content can be viewed in Dolby Atmos, with a supported audio device.

But even if you have the supported devices, you might not get the surround sound experience.

Firstly, double check the title you want to watch has the 5.1 or Dolby Atmos logo.

If you don’t see the logos, it doesn’t have those features.

Even with the right devices, viewers might not get surround sound.

If you’re watching Netflix in Chrome or on a Windows PC, you might not get the surround sound experience as Google Chrome doesn’t support it.

You’ll have to use either the Netflix app or open Netflix on the Microsoft Edge browser.

Lastly, ensure you connected all the plugs and cables correctly, particularly the HDMI cables.

If you’re still experiencing the problem, try using a different cable.

If you have a TV with an ARC (Audio Return Channel) port use that instead of plugging it into any HDMI port.
