Janet Street-Porter began her career as a fashion writer and columnist for the Daily Mail, and has been an influential voice since the 1970s. Despite a varied career, people will know the 75-year-old star from her numerous appearances on ITV’s Loose Women, where she has been a panellist for more than a decade. Although Janet spends a lot of time between Whitstable in Kent and London, she currently resides in Norfolk.

Before moving out to Norfolk in 2019 the TV star said that she was looking forward to a “good life in the countryside”.

In her column for The Independent, Janet revealed she has left the remote Yorkshire village she had lived in for 40 years to live in “a ramshackle house miles from a road, surrounded by water, hares, marsh deer and free roaming cattle” in Norfolk.

She said that she has decided to move to the county as she wants “a life of splendid isolation” and wants to help rural villages thrive and be part of a community.

Despite growing up in inner London, Janet said that growing up she spent every holiday in rural Wales visiting her grandma and, although her working life being in the capital, she has always favoured the rural life.

She shared that her nearest village shop was in Thurlton in South Norfolk, near the Suffolk border, and when she arrived she had bought newspapers and a marrow for 50p and praised the “chatty and enthusiastic” people that worked there.

The village of Thurlton is situated in south east Norfolk, 14 miles from the city of Norwich and 11 miles from the coastal town of Great Yarmouth. Thurlton is close to the Suffolk border, between Haddiscoe and Hales.

The area to the north, Low Thurlton, remains largely agricultural while the main village is largely a residential area. The population is around eight hundred and includes over two hundred children and young people under the age of 19.

The town has a village hall that was built to serve Thurlton and the neighbouring villages of Norton Subcourse and Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe. It is set on a rise next to the old Goliath Mill adjacent to the playing field.

There are many groups that use the village hall on a regular basis such as the Women’s Institute and the Pre-school groups. It is also used for meetings by many of the village organisations, such as the Horticultural Club and Parish Council, fundraising events and social gatherings.

Thurston also has a village pub that holds the slogan of ‘funded by the community for the community’ which continues to flourish. It has recently been included in the CAMRA good pub guide.

A huge benefit for those, such as Janet, moving from city life to areas like Thurlton in Norfolk is the major drop in house prices.

According to Rightmove, properties in Thurlton had an overall average price of £303,200 over the last year.

The majority of sales in Thurlton during the last year were detached properties, selling for an average price of £395,333. Semi-detached properties sold for an average of £150,000, with terraced properties fetching £180,000.

Overall, sold prices in Thurlton over the last year were nine percent up on the previous year and six percent up on the 2019 peak of £286,264.

Even general areas around Norfolk have low average house prices as Rightmove recorded that properties in Norfolk had an overall average price of £293,506 over the last year.

The majority of sales in Norfolk during the last year were detached properties, selling for an average price of £403,209. Terraced properties sold for an average of £217,141, with semi-detached properties fetching £263,743.

Overall, sold prices in Norfolk over the last year were similar to the previous year and 16 percent up on the 2019 peak of £252,780.

Norfolk is a historic county that holds a beautiful coastline with long stretches of sandy beaches, bustling market towns, a university city and thriving communities. 

It also has historic locations, fabulous walks and scenery, a growing business economy and excellent transport links to London.

Norfolk is definitely an up-and-coming county, proving to be a popular location for all people looking for a more rural place to live, but still have access to all the modern amenities we expect today.
