How to PIN-protect TV shows and movies with Netflix parental controls

NETFLIX is going to start letting you PIN-protect individual movies and TV series.

This means parents will have way more control over what content their children can watch using the Netflix app.

PIN protections on Netflix have already been around for a while, but you can currently only lock off shows depending on their maturity level.

But you'll now be able to choose specific content items and hide them away behind a four-digit numerical code.

Mike Hastings, director of enhanced content at Netflix, said: "We understand that every family is different, and that parents have differing perspectives on what they feel is appropriate to watch at different ages.

"PIN protection for a specific series or film provides families with an additional tool to make decisions they are comfortable with.

He added that the new tool would "give parents and guardians more specific control over what children can watch on the service".

Netflix is also going to start displaying the maturity level of a series or film much more prominently.

The maturity level will now be much more obvious when you hit play on a title, and will include a brief description of the content, like: "some mild rude humour".

"We want to ensure members are fully aware of the maturity level as they begin watching," said Hastings.

"We are also continuing to explore ways to make this information more descriptive and easier for our members to understand with just a quick glance."

You’ll need a laptop or smartphone to do this. Just follow these steps:

  1. Access your Account page from a web browser, like Google Chrome, Apple Safari, or Microsoft Edge
  2. Then choose the link for Parental Controls in the Settings section
  3. Enter your Netflix account password on the screen
  4. Then enter four numbers into the PIN field (letters aren't allowed)
  5. Set your PIN protection level

If you're trying to block a specific movie or TV show, scroll down to the Restrict Specific Titles section, and then enter the show title.

The move means anyone trying to watch that title will need to enter a PIN, regardless of its maturity rating.

However, this feature might not be available for you just yet – Netflix says it will start rolling out over the next few months.
