Hot tubs can quite often, and easily, get dirty, especially in the UK where the weather isn’t great for at least 90 percent of the year. Some of what goes into the hot tub can be filtered out. Dust, debris, chemicals and even bacteria on occasion depending on the type of filter you have. But a filter can only do so much, and for so long. To ensure the longevity and pristine working condition of your tub, it’s best to maintain its cleanliness throughout the year. How to keep your hot tub clean

Change the water even if you’re not using the tub

Experts recommend changing the water in your hot tub on a semi-regular basis.

However, generally clean water is clear water, therefore if it doesn’t look dirty and doesn’t have bits floating in it, you shouldn’t have to change it.

How long should the hot tub filter be on for?

Most leading firms recommend leaving the filter switched on for a minimum of eight hours a day, but some need up to 24 hours.

This differs per hot tub so it’s vital you check as keeping it on makes the pump more efficient.

What about salt water tubs?

Salt water tubs are known for being easier to maintain alongside the fact they are largely understood to provide users with a more relaxing experience.

Salt water tubs are also popular because they omit the use of chemicals, such as chlorine – but as with anything, they come with drawbacks.

They’re unsuited to those with sensitive skin due to the harsh nature of the salts, and when draining there can be damage caused to the surrounding environment.

Make sure to properly assess the pros and cons before splashing out.


Temperature comes down to personal preference, of course, but as a rule of thumb you shouldn’t exceed 40C.

Anything above this temperature can be potentially harmful to your body by triggering an increase in blood pressure and heart rate.

Time spent in the tub

Again, this is down to personal preference and any health conditions as people vary the time they can tolerate in water.

Experts, however, suggest that generally you shouldn’t go over 30 minutes as it’s important to give your body a break from the chemicals and heat.

Clean the tub without draining it

Cleaning the hot tub without draining it sounds like a messy task, but it needn’t be.

Making sure the pH levels are between 7.2 and 7.8 is the easiest way to effectively clean without draining.

However, this should only be a short term solution as it only delays the length of time taken for the water to dirty, so if the water looks unclean then it’s time to change it.

Plugging in your tub

A hot tub needs to be plugged in all the time if it’s going to work properly in the long term.

While this may lead to some worrying about electricity bills, it’s something to consider and properly research before you assess whether a tub is for you.

However, it’s worth noting it costs less to keep the hot tub on all the time than it does to switch off and back on again.
