‘Easy remedy’ to remove ‘sludge’ in radiators and maximise heating

Higher taxes, soaring energy prices, and stagnant wages have forced millions of households across the UK to find clever ways to save on their heating costs. Investing in insulation and being more frugal with your usage is one way to reduce your bills, but according to one expert, doing something as simple as cleaning your radiators can knock as much as 25 percent off the figure. Sam Price, founder of Heatable, explained the benefits of “power flushing”, and exactly how to do it to remove problematic sludge in your heating system.

According to recent research conducted by Enertek International, sludge in your heating system can increase bills by as much as 25 percent.

Sam Price, founder of Heatable told Express.co.uk: “Although not many homeowners even consider the quality or cleanliness of their central heating water, the reality is that it could be costing you hundreds of pounds every year.”

He explained that over time, this “sludge” can build up in the system as a result of rust and debris, contributing to more than just higher energy bills.

Sam added: “Among the problems associated with sludge accumulation is that it can disrupt water circulation, leading to cold spots in radiators and reduced heat output.”

How to tell if you have sludge in your radiators

Looking inside radiators is almost impossible, though there are other ways to tell if your central heating water is “dirty”.

Sam noted that cold spots on radiators when the heating is on is just one sign of poor water circulation.

He added that a cold radiator bottom and the radiator taking “an exceptionally long time to heat up” are also signs of a system with sludge.

While decreased efficiency is the main concern of dirty central heating water, it can also cause more costly damage to your boiler in the long run.

Sam said: “Poor quality heating water is one of the leading causes of boiler breakdowns in the UK and is commonly responsible for the corrosion of key components such as the heat exchanger.

“The good news is that dirty heating water is very easy to remedy with a standard power flush.”

This cleaning method is the most effective way to deep clean radiators internally to improve heat distribution.

How to clean radiator water

According to Sam, power flushing is a “very easy remedy” for sludge problems.

The flushing process should be performed every five to six years to ensure the quality of heating systems water is maintained to a high standard.

The heating expert noted that this will also help prevent damage to metallic components, as well as the development of blockages.

He added: “Sludge slows down the system, reducing its efficiency and increasing your power bills. If it has been more than five years since your last power flush, it’s probably time to consider one sooner rather than later.”

Calling a professional to flush your radiators is the safest option though you can do it yourself using a power flusher machine.

An expert at the DIY Doctor said: “To start a power flush on a central heating system you will need to isolate your power supply to the system. Close both isolating valves on either side of your central heating pump. You are then in a position to remove the pump from your system.”

Next, turn off your radiator valves, disconnect one, and allow the air bleed valve to stay open so air can come into your radiator and water out from the disconnected valve.

When all the water has been removed from the radiator you can connect your power flush to the return valves on the tails of your central heating. Close all radiators except one and allow it to flush through, repeat this process with every radiator.

The DIY expert said: “Now open all radiator valves and let the flush flow freely. When the system has been flushed out and you have clean running water coming out, add a neutralising agent to neutralise the cleaning process.”
