The rising cost of living is impacting people in different ways, but soaring energy bills and hikes in the food shop are not good news for many. This is why many people will be looking towards their payments and benefits to provide them with support.
Each year, the Government recognises those who are in receipt of forms of support through the Christmas Bonus.
It is a one-off tax-free payment made around the festive season.
The Christmas Bonus is paid to people who receive certain benefits or payments.
They must have received the payments within what is known as the “qualifying week”.
This is normally the first full week of December, so there is still time to apply for support and receive the bonus.
Currently, the Christmas Bonus is worth £10 as a one-off payment.
While this may not seem a lot, it could help towards a festive purchase, or simply put a small sum in someone’s back pocket this winter.
Some have called for the Christmas Bonus to be uprated, but at present there do not seem to be any plans to do so.

Individuals will not have to claim to receive the Christmas Bonus as they should get it automatically.
To be eligible, a person must be present or “ordinarily resident” in the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man or Gibraltar during the qualifying week and in receipt of certain benefits or payments.
The bonus does not impact any other benefits a person receives, so they do not have to worry about getting it.
A Christmas Bonus should be paid into the account a person typically receives their benefit or payment.
It is likely to show up as ‘DWP XB’ on a bank statement to help Britons spot if they have received it.
Those who think they should get the bonus, but do not, can take action to rectify the issue.
The DWP states these people should contact the Jobcentre Plus office which deals with their payments, or the Pension Service.
Individuals should be aware if they have not claimed their state pension and are not entitled to one of the other qualifying benefits, they will not get a Christmas Bonus.

- Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
- State pension (including Graduated Retirement Benefit)
- Severe Disablement Allowance (transitionally protected)
- Unemployability Supplement or Allowance (paid under Industrial Injuries or War Pensions schemes)
- War Disablement Pension at State Pension age
- War Widow’s Pension
- Widowed Mother’s Allowance
- Widowed Parent’s Allowance
