As the coronavirus crisis continues and millions of office workers are still working from home, people are looking to move out of London, or move house in general. This means that inevitably, council tax rate will changed. Whether you’re about to rent your first ever home or you’re about to get a footing on the property ladder, council tax is definitely something you need to think about.
CEO of video rental app Movebubble Aidan Rushby told Express.co.uk: “Council tax can easily cause confusion – especially when moving home.
“Considering it’s usually the renters’ responsibility to pay council tax, we want to help make sure home movers know everything they need to know to avoid being startled by any nasty surprises.”
The rates for council tax are set by more than 9,000 local authorities across the UK, and are usually payable in ten monthly instalments followed by two months of paying nothing.
Some people are exempt from paying council tax, including full time students and some people on low incomes and benefits.
Areas with the lowest council tax
According to MoveBubble, the area with the highest council tax rate in London is Kingston-upon-Thames, in the south-west of the city.
In Kingston, council tax rates range from £1,316.53 per year in Band A, to £3,949.60 in Band H.
The lowest rate of council tax in London is Westminster, where Band A costs £520.19 and Band H will set you back £1,560.56.
However, in Westminster, council tax rates are the least of your issues as houses and flats cost millions of pounds in central London.
Outside London, the highest council tax rate can be found in Blaenau Gwent, in Wales.
In Blaenau Gwent, houses in Band A will pay £1,340.17, and houses in Band H will pay £4,020.52.
The cheapest place for council tax outside London is Windsor & Maidenhead, surprisingly, thanks to its links to London.
If you live in Windsor & Maidenhead and your property is in Band A, your council tax will set you back just £767, whereas if your house is in Band H, you will need to pay £2,300.

The information for council tax rates comes from the Government’s Property Data website, and from the respective councils of areas named.
If you are renting a flat, you will most likely be responsible for taking care of the council tax payments as most landlords won’t include it in the rent price.
It is recommended you check your contract and speak to your landlord to understand the full extent of your council tax liability.
You can also contact the local council to see about any discounts or exemptions you could be entitled to.
In addition to some groups of people, entire properties can be exempt from council tax as well, so it’s worth doing a little bit of digging about your home.
Mr Rushby told Express.co.uk: “It is important to remember that the cost of council tax varies in different areas and in many cases, won’t be included in the price of rent.
“However, the concept of ‘all inclusive’ package properties – where the cost of council tax and bills are included in the rent – is on the rise, with renters looking for convenience and ease.
“MoveBubble has seen a 28 percent year-on-year rise in demand for these types of properties.”
