TikTok user reveals cleaning hack for spotless oven trays
Wooden chopping boards are often a lot more attractive than plastic ones. Purchasing a wooden butchers block can also be a lot easier than having multiple chopping boards. However, wooden chopping boards and surfaces that are used for cutting up strong-smelling ingredients such as garlic and onion can often cling onto those scents.
Fans of cleaning sensation Mrs Hinch have now revealed their top tips for getting rid of those smells from chopping boards.
Mrs Hinch, real name Sophie Hinchliffe, is a cleaning influencer who has gained a massive following on social media.
Fans of hers have gathered in groups on social media sites and created groups dedicated to cleaning tips and advice.
One user said on a Mrs Hinch fans Facebook group that they had tried multiple methods to clean their wooden chopping board but still couldn’t get rid of the smell of garlic.

They said: “I’ve got a wooden chopping board and I’ve cut garlic on it and now every time I cut something else on it it just tastes like garlic and I can’t get it off for the life of me, I’ve cleaned it with fairy washing up liquid, the pink stuff spray and elbow grease.
“What can get the garlic taste off of it. I don’t have a dish big enough to soak it so that isn’t an option.”
The answer from multiple cleaners was to use lemon juice and a layer of salt.
“Cover in thin layer of salt, cut lemon in half and rub vigorously for a couple of minutes, then soak board in hot water with the juice of the other half of the lemon for five minutes, leave to dry,” one user confirmed.

Another said: “Half a lemon dipped in coarse salt then scrub.”
“Lemon juice and salt or lemon juice and bicarb,” replied another user.
One cleaning fan said: “Sprinkle it with salt and clean with half a lemon.
“If that doesn’t work it’s time for a new chopping board.”
Other users also recommended using bicarbonate of soda with lemon juice instead of salt.
Some members of the group recommended oiling the board regularly with olive oil to “treat the wood” and stop flavours from clinging to it.
One user urged her fellow cleaners not to put them in the dishwasher.
While others said to simply buy plastic or glass ones to stop the smell.
However, wooden chopping boards have antibacterial properties where they can absorb bacteria, trap it and then kill it.
A Facebook user commented this on the Facebook post: “Wooden chopping boards naturally remove bacteria and are much better than plastic ones.
“As long as they are cleaned with washing up water they are okay.
“Butchers use huge blocks of wood to chop their meat.”
