Cleaning sensation Mrs Hinch, whose real name is Sophie Hinchliffe, first found fame after posting unusual cleaning tips and tricks online and on TV. The cleaning guru now has over four million Instagram followers. Inspired by the cleaning influencer, Mrs Hinch fans have now created their own Facebook pages dedicated to sharing cleaning tips and recommendations. One of these cleaning tips includes how to remove foul smells from washing machines.

Posting on Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook page, one woman asked for advice on how to remove mould odours from her washing machine.

Clare Griffiths wrote: “My washing machine smells foisty. Any tips, please help?”

There’s nothing worse than opening the washing machine door and being confronted by an unpleasant odour.

To stop washing machines smelling, homeowners need to understand the source of the problem.

Nasty washing machine smells are caused by a combination of mould, mildew and bacteria.

Fortunately Clare’s post was inundated with comments from fellow Mrs Hinch fans eager to share their cleaning tips.

A popular solution was to use dishwasher tablets.

Sue Baker said: “Put two dishwasher tablets in the drum and put on a hot wash, brilliant results.”

Trish Clark said: “Put on hottest wash with a couple of dishwasher tablets.”

Jeanette Massie replied: “I tried it yesterday. Seems to have worked. Did it on a 40 wash.”

Cheryl Beneke added: “Stop with the softener, it’s the worst thing for your washing machine. Do a hot wash with a dishwasher tablet, it should do the trick.”

Other Mrs Hinch fans decide to take a more natural approach by using white vinegar to rid the washing machine of nasty smells.

Shirley Bryant said: “Put vinegar in the powder compartment and put on a wash cycle.”

Annie Bunch wrote: “Stop using fabric conditioners and use white vinegar instead. Any smells will soon go away.”

Susan Truly commented: “bottle of white vinegar in an empty washer and runs 90 percent cycle.”

Some cleaning enthusiasts suggested adding baking soda to white vinegar to remove washing machine odours.

Sally Birtwell said: “A mixture of a cup of white vinegar and a dessert spoon of baking soda in the washing machine did the trick for me.”

Debs Finlay wrote: “Do a hot wash with baking soda and half a bottle of white vinegar to clean the drum and get rid of any smells.”

Susan Parry added: “Try putting an empty washing machine on a hot wash with white vinegar and baking soda.”
