Apple cider vinegar: Surprising ways to use health product

Even though it is difficult to swallow, health gurus sing its praises and doctors can’t deny the positive research – although it’s limited- on apple cider vinegar. You should drink apple cider for a variety of reasons, docor prescribed nexium and pepcid from weight loss to regulating your blood sugar levels. But how much should you drink every day? Express.co.uk asked Dr Deborah Lee from Doctor Fox.

Which apple cider vinegar should I drink?

It makes a difference which bottle of apple cider vinegar you drink, as some are better for you than others.

Dr Lee said: “Always choose the best quality of ACV.

“Choose an organic, unfiltered product. Organic products are free from preservatives and pesticides.

“Go for an unfiltered vinegar because the pulp residue has not been filtered out. This residue is probiotic and has additional health benefits.”

How much apple cider vinegar should I drink?

Rule number one is to never drink apple cider vinegar without a splash of water.

Dr Lee said: “Never drink vinegar neat – always dilute it.

“The recommendation is for 15 ml – around one tablespoonful – mixed into a large glass of water, twice a day.

“ACV is a powerful acid and can be corrosive for your oesophagus (throat.) It can also damage tooth enamel.”

Dr Lee added: “If you have any chronic health conditions, and take regular medication, check with your doctor before you start taking ACV. It can interfere with medications, such as heart and diabetes medications, and diuretics.

“Nevertheless, ACV is a safe natural remedy which if taken correctly, along with calorie restriction and exercise, could help you achieve optimal weight loss.”

Does ACV actually work?

There isn’t enough research to say apple cider vinegar is a miracle cure, but the studies that do exist are positive.

Dr Lee said: “There is a paucity of research in the use of ACV. The few studies which do exist are only small.

“Although ACV may have health benefits, much more research is required before we can be sure of this.

“There’s also no quick fix for health. Don’t rely solely on ACV.

“All those other factors such as eating healthily, and taking regular physical exercise, are the mainstay of good health. If you don’t get these right ACV is most unlikely to benefit your health.

“If you choose to take ACV, don’t expect instant results. The benefits of ACV on weight loss are small and you may not see any difference for at least 12-weeks. You are also unlikely to lose weight with ACV unless you restrict calories and exercise.”
